Hellfighters Hill Climb, formally the Bessemer Hill Climb has been one of the local favorites. This Fat Fish Challenge can really be painful if you are racing your guts out. It also is worth every bit of sweat and tears (hopefully no blood). If climbing a mountain is not quite your thing, we’ll have a separate climb for those in the Recreational Category. No matter where you fall it’s a blast coming back down. Please try not to fall, that fall was being using in a different context. Should you fall, everyone, including you, will be happy that you were wearing a helmet, because if you want to race, you will be wearing a helmet.
*Parking is limited. Carpool!! *It takes about 15 minutes to get there from the west side Walmart. If you don’t know where Walmart is, follow the Walmartians and keep going west when they stop. Also, never look a Walmartian in the eye.
Fat Fish has acquired permission to cross the public land at the bottom of the mountain. Please remember to be courteous to traffic, neighbors, ranchers, etc. by giving a friendly wave and not taking up too much roadway as we make our way to the starting line. Should a Frenchman try to offer you a crepe, just keep moving, it’s a trick. As such this will be the only time you’ll be able to ride to the top of Bessemer Mountain.
The race will startat 6:30. The top of Bessemer sits just over 1000’ higher in elevation than the start. The course is right at about 6 miles long with the first 4 being a gradual uphill on gravel road before the going gets tough. Expect some rocky loose two track most of the way up and down. Our race ends at the top and we hope to have everyone make it back safely. Please take as much time as you need to make that happen and also have fun. It’s your reward for all that climbing!!
Comfort tip: Bring bug spray. The mosquitos can be terrible up there and no amount of coaxing and pleading has made them any nicer.
Fun Tip: Stick around we have awesome prizes to give away at the end of each race. You may win a new car (but most likely not). But you may win something cool!
Recovery Tip: I tried curling up in a ball and wept uncontrollably but that didn’t help. You can enjoy some free food, water and gatorade provided by our amazing sponsors!
Race Tip: Remember to have fun. Pain is fun. More fun than laying on the couch wondering where all your cycling buddies are. There is no racing going down the mountain. So take it easy and ride safe.
Family Tip: We will have a kids race. Families are welcome to bring cow bells and cheer the little ones on. The starting area and kids race is right along the North Platte River and is a common public fishing area. You could bring fishing poles, cameras and whatever else the kiddos like to entertain themselves with. Again, there will be no betting. This is for fun. I’m shocked that I had to add this part.
Hellfighter Hill Climb directions: -Head west out of town on hwy 220 towards alcova. -Turn Right on Bessemer Bend (also county road 308). -Stay on pavement and about 2 miles later you'll reach the river. Hang a right. From this point on please follow the black and orange parking signs.
