It's been 5+ years that we've been hosting an event on Muddy Mountain and it still feels like it's the hidden gem of cycling in our area. What we love about Muddy is that you get the twisted and technical trails that challenge you but without all the elevation gain that you have on Casper Mountain. The trails flow and are fun and about 50% of the time you'll get back to the parking lot and realize you're bleeding but don't even care! Racing here is a great way to learn the trails so that you can come back with your family on a weekend to camp and explore a little more.
*As always, parking is limited. Carpool!! *It takes about 30 minutes to get to the race start from Casper College. Of all the races to ask your boss if you can leave early, this is the one. Take off work a half an hour early and take your time getting there. Those washboard roads are pretty jarring.
Fat Fish has acquired permission to host an event on BLM land. The BLM charges $6 per head who participates at this event. We are so thankful to our amazing team sponsors who are the ones that are covering this cost each year. Without sponsors who support cycling in Casper, we'd probably just do a few laps up and down the events center hill for every race. OUCH!
The race will startat 6:30. Comfort tip: Usually, folks are wearing jackets after the race to hide from skeeters and the cool night air.
Fun Tip: You should seriously stick around after this race. The wind rarely blows, the sunsets are crazy beautiful, the peaceful sound Then the laughter and stories of who hit a tree the hardest are experiences that stay with you all year long.
Recovery Tip: You can enjoy some free food, water and gatorade provided by our amazing sponsors!
Race Tip: HAVE FUN! This course is fun and most people only make it to Muddy one time a year. Absorb every foot of trail and enjoy the twists and turns. I've heard of some folks talking about shaping their handle bars out for a narrower bar so that they don't hit the trees... Yeah, it's narrow in spots. But, there are only a few places that are so narrow that you'll pucker up. Slow down, or just wheelie through the tight spots ;)
Family Tip: We will have a kids race at 6:15. Families are welcome to bring cow bells and cheer the little ones on. The starting area and kids race is right by the finish line. There isn't a lot of opportunity for a big course here but the kids sure have fun playing on the mountain all night while you're out racing.
Directions: Head south on Casper Mountain Road. Go up the mountain and keep on driving. The paved road starts to go down the back side of the mountain and turns to gravel. Stay straight and continue on south up Muddy Mountain. The road is terribly washboarded. Continue straight on this road as it turns to the east and a few miles later you'll drive right past the camp grounds and the finish line of the race. Parking along side the road.
