The Squaw Creek area is a public section of land that is open to ride and hike on all year round. It is a state school section of land and is leased by a local rancher. This means that there are often some cows that will be sharing the trail with you. They typically don't mind us and we don't mind them either. There are nearly 7 miles of single track in the area. Do not cut trails or park on any of the grass. As part of a state school section, no motorized vehicles are allowed beyond the small dirt parking lot and there is no camping or fires.
*Parking is VERY limited and only about 20 cars can fit in the parking lot. All other vehicles will be required to park on ONLY the WEST side of the gravel road so that the road stays wide enough for safe travel. Carpool!! *It takes about 10 minutes to get there from the west side Walmart. If you don’t know where Walmart is, follow the Walmartians and keep going west when they stop. Also, never look a Walmartian in the eye.
Fat Fish has acquired permission to host this race on State Public Land. Please be respectful of the land, the animals on the land and the neighboring residents. The only complaint from locals is the amount of speeding vehicle traffic. Plan accordingly and arrive early so that you can drive the speed limit.
The race will startat 6:30. The Squaw Creek riding area is a wonderful section of land with views overlooking Casper. The sunsets here are breathtaking. Unfortunately, the winds that blast off of the mountain here can also be breathtaking.
Comfort tip: Bring bug spray.
Fun Tip: Squaw Creek is running high and the stream crossings can be pretty deep. Blast through the water for an epic splash down and cool photo opportunity. If you don't like cleaning your bike, take the slow way around by crossing the bridge.
Recovery Tip: You can enjoy some free food, water and gatorade provided by our amazing sponsors! Stick around for a while and watch the setting sun while you enjoy some of your own recovery drinks.
Race Tip: This course is almost all single track. If you don't get a good starting position and hustle to the top of the opening climb to get a great position, you will likely get stuck behind someone on the single track descent. Passing through tall grass and forcing a lesser experienced rider off of the trail is just plain dumb. Don't do it. Don't be that guy that causes a bad wreck and takes the fun out of it for others. Be nice and always encourage your fellow cyclists!
Kids Race: We will have a kids race that starts at 6:10 and will involve a few laps in the parking area so we can all see and cheer them on. After the kids finish, parents are encouraged to take them down to the ranch area to cheer on the adult racers near the finish area and play in the green grass. Squaw Creek does have a lot of fast moving water in the spring and the abandoned structures will most likely have some loose nails laying around. It would be a lot of fun to play by but could be dangerous as well. Please watch your children and enjoy the area. At least you’ll be out of the wind there.
Please take time to thank our sponsors! If it wasn’t for them, you all would be winning stuff that we just find laying around our houses. Who wants to win a used pair of socks that's been in my tackle box for the past three years?
